I was experiencing bad acid reflux (silent type with bad sore thoarts) for years. My Dr. prescribe nortriptyline for some chronic pain I was having and after one 10mg dose my sore throat was nearly gone and after my second dose, I was feeling great with my sore throat. However, the nortriptyline didn't get rid of my pain. Is nortriptyline capable of helping with acid reflux?
Can Nortriptyline help with acid reflux disease?

I was prescribed Nortriptyline specifically to treat acid reflux. After years of suffering and even enduring surgery it was the only drug that helped. My brother has severe acid reflux as well and has had the same results after taking Nortriptyline.

You cannot believe how weird I find that. An antidepressant for acid reflux, who would have thought.

My doctor explained that Nortriptyline acts as a sedative. Some people are susceptible to acid reflux because they are anxious and find it difficult to fully relax which can cause stomach acid to be forced up the esophagus. I was sceptical that there would be any results because nothing else has ever alleviated my symptoms before.and to my surprise the results wee amazing!

What was the dosage that helped? My doctor just prescribed it for my acid reflux as well. She has me taking it only at night and we started with 25mg. Did you take it just at night or all day and how much? Thanks so much!

Nortiriptylene is an old anti depressant and I seriously doubt it would do anything for acid reflux. To tell you the truth I didn't know drs were still prescribing it, lolol. Cymbalta and Savella are the 2 that are recommended for chronic pain.

Just to mention, I've taken Prilosec when my acid reflux "acts up." It takes a little while to become effective (for me). The only side-affect I've experienced with it is dry skin. If I take a couple of ant-acids once reflux begins, it usually takes care of the problem. However, if its severe, I turn to the Prilosec just long enough to be back to normal. Of course, check with your doctor re any medication interactions that you might have. Best wishes - C.E.
